Blessington Educate Together

June 2007

Student Council

The school now has its own student council. Part of our Ethical Education Programme is learning about equality and justice. With this in mind, the children ran for election. Successful candidates present a speech to the class and a vote takes place.

The student council is a group of students who try to improve things around the school, We have ideas but we use yours too,

Assemblies

We continue our twice weekly assemblies when we set a target on Mondays and celebrate achievements with Shining Star awards on Fridays. Targets include co-operation, solving problems, compromising, kind hands & kind words.

GAA Training

GAA football training started last Thursday. The children were all very excited when Diarmuid arrived. Infants, 1st & 2nd classes were first out and worked on their throwing & catching skills. After an hour they were ready for a well-earned rest!

3rd, 4th & 5th were then put through their paces for nearly 90 minutes! They learned proper handling & hitting techniques as well as improving their fitness. All the children had a fantastic time and are looking forward to the next training session on Thursday.

Remember: proper runners and tracksuits are essential.

Parents Association

Dear Parent,

Just to bring you up-to-date with the progress of the forming of a Parents Association. The following people have put themselves forward;

We do not plan to have a meeting to take any more volunteers, but if you are interested in joining us, please contact one of the above.

We will start the formal process of forming an Association, but in the meantime we need to raise funds for the school. Adele has given us a list of items that are needed. We plan to a have a Sports Day on 7th June. This will be held at 5pm and will involve Parents and Children. We intend asking the Parents and Children of those due to enter the school in Sept 2007. We will have a raffle (any donations or suggestions greatly accepted), a Tomb olla & a barbeque. If you have any ideas how else we can raise much needed funds for the school please share them with us.

Looking forward to next year. We are keen to setup a wide selection of Extra Curricular activities. Again we are looking for ideas, suggestions and if you know of anyone who has some talents they wish to share, please let us know.

We look forward to hearing from you with your suggestions and ideas. We also intend

Asking for your support in organizing various events and hope we can rely on everyone for their commitment to the school.

We need you.

New Equipment for Infants

We now have some new equipment up and running in the younger classroom. The sand-tray and painting easels are big hit, now only with the infants, but with 1st & 2nd class also.

There was a tremendous effort from all the children on 29th March for our sportathon to raise money for the Blessington Lifeboat. The senior classes completed the 20 challenge, 20 minutes each of basketball & football, 20 laps of the school and the 20 obstacle race.

The junior classes did brilliantly with their 10 challenge. Some very tired children went home feeling deservedly very proud of themselves that day. The children managed to raise a hefty 923.30. On Tuesday 1st May, the children presented the cheque to local councillor Jim Ruttle, chairperson of the Lifeboat Committee. Jim said BETNS was actually the first group to fulfil its promise to fundraise for the lifeboat. Another representative of the committee, Eammon Murray, spoke about the need for the service on the lake and that during the summer months a 999 call is received every 10 days. He said they needed to raise 60k and the money raised by the children of BETNS would actually cover the running cost of the boat for a year. Well done to everyone involved.

Anyone, over 18, interested in training as a volunteer for the lifeboat crew, contact blessingtonlifeboat@gmail.com.
